Masoor Dhal

Usually, I cook lunch in the morning before I go to work.  There are days I get up and don’t want to cook but at the same time, I wanted to have a wholesome meal for lunch. Those days, I prefer a one-pot meal where I can just throw things and make it a complete meal. Since I use toor dhal, moong dhal in sambhar, I prefer to use whole masoor dhal for this recipe. I use instant pot to make dhal and rice together in a pot in pot method. If you don’t have instant pot then you can use a regular pressure cooker as well. 

Dhal cooked in garlic, spices, and tamarind gives this awesome tangy taste which is our family favorite. When it’s ready, serve it with vegetables and yogurt to make it a wholesome meal. Now let’s get into the recipe without further due.

Ingredients:

  • Oil- 1 Teaspoon
  • Garlic- 5 pieces 
  • Cumin Seeds- 1 Teaspoon
  • Black Pepper- 1 Teaspoon
  • Curry leaves- 1 strand
  • Onion- 1 medium 
  • Tomato- 1 medium
  • Red Chilli Powder- 1 Teaspoon
  • Coriander Powder- 2 Teaspoon
  • Turmeric Powder- 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Tamarind- 1 small piece
  • Whole Red Masoor Dhal- 1 cup
  • Salt – 1 Teaspoon
  • Coriander leaves- 1/4 cup
  • Water- 2 cups

Steps:

  1. Finely chop garlic, onion, and tomato.
  2. Turn on the saute mode in an instant pot.
  3. Once the instant pot is hot, add oil.
  4. Now add garlic, cumin seed, and black pepper.
  5. Once the garlic turns brown, add the onion.
  6. When the onion is translucent, add tomato and saute until it’s cooked well.
  7. Now add Turmeric, Red chilli powder, and coriander powder and saute for a minute.
  8. Once the masala is cooked well, now add the dhal and saute it.
  9. Now add Tamarind, salt, water, coriander leaves, and mix well.
  10. Cancel saute mode and place tall trivet.10. In a separate dish add one cup of rice and two cups of water.
  11. Place rice dish on top of the trivet.
  12. Now turn on manual mode and set it to 14 mins and timer for 30 mins.
  13. Once it’s cooked, let it release the pressure naturally.

Now cut some cucumber and toss it with salt and pepper. Serve rice and dhal with some ghee, cucumber, or any green salad along with some yogurt. Enjoy a wholesome meal with less than 10 mins in the kitchen!!
